Activities

Version española Versión española

The student activities include either field trips or working with the data that was taken during excursions. Most of the field trips go to Volcán de Colima, but at times there are also trips to Isla Socorro or the volcanoes of Chiapas. Activities include using an infrared camera to measure the variation in the thermal emission from the volcanic dome, fumaroles or eruption columns and using a correlation or mini-UV spectrometer to measure the SO2 flux of the volcano from Nevado de Colima or other points around its flanks. Samples from the springs that have their source on the flanks of the Volcano are taken regularly. Characteristics of ash falls, pyroclastic flows and lahars are recorded after eruptions, and magnetic measurements are taken once a month. Seismic data that is taken by the regional network RESCO is used to find out more about the characteristics of explosions, rockfalls and degassing events.
